Union City barely broke a sweat in moving on to the semifinals of the District 13A volleyball tournament.
Things figure to get much tougher for the Lady Tornadoes – starting tonight.
UC rolled past overmatched Lake County 3-0 in the tourney quarterfinals Monday, winning 25-6, 25-3, and 25-10 for its ninth consecutive triumph. The victory was the 15th of the season for the Purple and Gold (15-4), matching the mark for the second-most wins in a season in program history.
Standing between the third-seeded Twister girls and a berth in Thursday’s championship game is No. 2 Milan, which split a pair of regular-season meetings with Union City.
The second of two tournament semifinals between UC and the Lady Bulldogs will be played at 7 p.m. tonight at Gibson County High School. Regular season champion GC and fourth-seeded South Fulton or No. 5 Halls play in the first semi at 5:30.
The two victors will play for the 13A title Thursday at 6 p.m. at GCHS with both entries moving on to the Region 7A Tournament next week.
The Lady Tornadoes will be looking to advance to regional play for just the third time in the 13-season history of the program and for the first time since 2020.
Union City had an easy time of it in sweeping short-handed Lake County for the third time this fall on Monday.
Madie Theobald led the way with 15 assists and 12 of the Lady Twisters’ 32 service aces against a Falcon squad that was reportedly missing a handful of players due to fall break. Brianna McBride served up a team-high 13 aces and had seven kills – also a club-best.
Mary Kate Sinclair had four aces, and Allysia Davis threw down four kills.
UC was guilty of just 16 errors in the three games.
“I was proud of our starters for coming in and staying focused,” Union City head coach Jessica Graham said. “We were able to give some of our younger girls a chance to get some experience, and I was pleased with their effort.
“I do believe we are prepared for Tuesday night.”
