Union City’s first band competition of the season met with positive reviews.

The Purple People racked up five awards – four of those either 1st or 2nd place – in the Hornet Invitational at South Gibson County High School on Saturday.

The Marching Tornadoes placed first in Percussion and Color Guard in their classification, and second in the Drum Major and Band.

Overall – out of 21 bands in all classes – UC was fourth.

“For our first competition, I feel like our students did a good job,” veteran Union City High School Band Director Jason Deem claimed. “There are always things to improve on, and we will focus on getting better in all areas each time we compete.”

Deem said his group is still preparing to host the annual WTSBOA Marching Festival and UC Invitational on Saturday, despite an unfavorable forecast.

A dozen schools have committed to the WTSBOA competition on Saturday morning, with another 24 bands slated to compete in the UCI in the evening.
