Both Union City golf teams secured spots in the Region 7A Golf Tournament after third-place finishes in the District 14A tourney at Persimmon Hills (Sharon) on Monday.
The Tornado boys (338) claimed the final team berth behind Westview (293) and McKenzie (309). UC finished ahead of Obion County, Bradford, South Fulton, and Huntingdon.
Brody Riley’s 81 (40-41) represented the Twisters’ best score. Gavin McGuire (42-40) and Copeland Chism (42-40) each shot 82, and Logan Vincent carded a 93 (53-40). Finn Frankum came in with a 97.
Martin recorded the Top 3 individual scores in the event, with Luke Stephenson claiming the championship with a 68, three shots ahead of teammate Ethan Hatler.
Union City’s girls finished a distant third in a three-team field, registering a 224 to trail McKenzie (184) and Westview (186).
Alli Kate Frilling – battling a sickness – still posted a third-place individual finish to earn a medal after shooting 86 (44-42) for the Lady Tornadoes. Teammate Madi Pate (70-68) registered a 138, and Carley Frilling shot 150 (76-74).
Charli Weatherford (73) edged Westview’s Maddie Gray (75) for the individual title.
Friday’s regional tournament will also be played at the Weakley County course, beginning at 8 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the tourney will be moved to Monday.
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
UC 3, Ripley 0
The Lady Tornadoes completed a season sweep of Ripley, spoiling the Lady Tigers’ Senior Night in the process.
Union City won in straight sets, 25-15, 26-24, and 25-7.
The Lady Twisters improved to 8-4 on the season.
Madie Theobald had 13 assists and five saves to pace Union City. Clare Atwill finished with a dozen digs, and Gracelyn Sims had a team-high 10 kills.
Brianna McBride served up five of the Tornadoes’ 17 aces and contributed six digs and four kills. Allysia Davis threw down six kills.
Union City will take another lengthy road trip today, traveling to Carlise County.
