Hazel, Ky.–A field fire on Stateline Road near Hazel spread to a tobacco barn but thankfully, quick action by the Calloway County Fire & Rescue protected the barn from major damage.
The Calloway County 911 Communications Center dispatched the Fire & Rescue out to the field fire near the 4700 block of Stateline Road East near the Hazel community. Dispatch also advised responding units that the fire was threatening a tobacco barn.
Upon arrival of the first truck, they began putting out the fire & attempting to protect the barn. Once the fire in the field was extinguished it could be seen that the fire seemed to have started from the fire inside the tobacco barn. Firefighters were able to safely enter the barn to check the conditions inside; it was found that the bottom of the barn wall, on the same side as the field that was on fire, was burning.
The owner of the barn decided to have firefighters extinguish all the fire inside the barn as a precaution to avoid the possibility of a more serious fire. CCFR extinguished all fire inside the tobacco barn as requested.
CCFR responded with 1 pumper, 2 tankers and 2 brush trucks with 11 firefighters and was on scene for about an hour and a half. Thankfully the fire was found & called in by the owner before it turned into a structure fire. It is because of this & the quick actions of our members that the barn received little to no damage & is still able to be used.
