UC Softball, Cross Country Post Good Showings

Union City scored five times in the bottom of the first to erase a three-run deficit and went on to edge Hickman County 8-7 in middle school softball on Monday.

Sophie Palmer went 2-for-2, reached base three times, and scored three runs for the Lady Tornadoes, who improved to 7-8 with two games remaining in their regular season.

Maddie Steward had a hit and scored twice, Sadie Gregg singled and drove in a run, and Averi Riley singled and scored for UC, which took advantage of five Hickman County errors.

Austyn Dilday was the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs while striking out four.

Union City plays at Gibson County today before closing out its 2024 campaign with a home game Thursday vs. Trenton.

UC girls, boys win

Union City prepped for next week’s district and regional tournaments on the Persimmon Hills course at Sharon by claiming a pair of team wins.

The Lady Tornadoes beat Gleason 107-125, while the Twister boys eased past Greenfield 172-211.

Golfers from Dresden and Bruceton also completed but failed to put together a full team.

UC’s Alli Kate Frilling was the girls’ medalist after shooting a 45. Teammates Madi Pate and Chloe Norton each came in with 62s.

Gavin McGuire posted the top score in the boys’ competition, leading the Purple and Gold with a 39. Brody Riley finished with a 42, Finn Frankum carded a 44, and Copeland Chism registered a 49.

Union City will wind up its regular season play today at Wynridge Greens in Troy.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

UC fares well at Brownsville

The Tornado boys’ team finished as runner-up in a large 25-team field in the Tomcat Invitational at Haywood on Monday.

Four runners from that Union City squad earned medals with Top 25 finishes.

Madix Turner was 2nd overall among 240 participants with a time of 13:21. Brody Fields placed 6th at 13:43, Nash Norsworthy was 17th at 14:21, and Jake Lattus came in 22nd with a time of 14:24 in the two-mile race.

Cooper Waggoner placed 33rd at 15:04.

Hadlee Duncan earned a medal for the Twister girls – her time of 16:53, putting her in 12th place among 135 runners.

Jayvee runners for UC brought home four medals with Top 10 showings.

They included Chloe Baumgardner (1st place, girls), Will D. McKinnis (2nd  place, boys), Camden Watts (3rd), and Stephen Herrell (4th). Walton Harder recorded a 21st-place finish.

Union City will next compete at Three Oaks on Sept. 24.
