Huntingdon, Tenn.–Carroll County 4-H youth at Huntingdon Middle School are leading the way in soil conservation efforts by participating in the innovative “Soil Your Undies” challenge. 6th graders in Mrs. Jamie Sanders science classes are learning about soil and its benefits. This hands-on educational initiative aims to raise awareness about soil health and the importance of sustainable agricultural practices.
The “Soil Your Undies” challenge involves burying cotton underwear in soil and observing their decomposition over time. Cotton underwear, being 100% natural, provides a clear indicator of soil health by how quickly it decomposes. The more decomposed the underwear, the healthier and more active the soil.
“Our 4-H members are enthusiastic about this unique approach to soil conservation. It’s a fun and engaging way for them to learn about the critical role soil plays in our environment and how healthy soil contributes to a sustainable future.”
