As students begin filling cafeteria tables, parents all over the country question whether their child is getting high quality and healthy food from their chosen educational establishment. At Hollow Rock-Bruceton, the FFA Chapter has begun combating this question with new improvements to the school menus. During the summer, FFA officers Taylor Walters and Makray Brown planted cucumbers to contribute to the school garden. After the cucumbers grew, the students began wondering if the school would like to serve the cucumbers in the cafeteria. Walters and Brown first started their nutrition journey by asking the head of the cafeteria, Regina McGuire, if she and the cafeteria staff would be okay with bringing the homegrown cucumbers into the into the lunchroom. After earning an agreement, the FFA Chapter then needed do decide how the transition would affect the lunches. Finally, a decision was made. Walters and Brown would serve the cucumbers in the cafeteria, tell their fellow classmates about the new vegetables, and hand them a poll to write their ideas and thoughts on. The results for the change turned out to be amazing, with both staff and students giving back kind and encouraging comments. Since then, the organic and delicious vegetables have been making students healthier every meal, and the FFA Chapter hopes to continue supplying the cafeteria with more and better vegetables in the future.
