Union City, Tenn.–Gavin McGuire continued his strong play, shooting a match-best 39 to help Union City beat host Dyersburg and Milan in high school golf Tuesday.
The Tornadoes finished at 168 – 10 shots better than the Trojans and far ahead of Milan (207) in play at The Farms.
Brody Riley was also again steady for UC, coming in just one stroke behind McGuire. Copeland Chism finished with a 44, and Coop Frankum carded a 45.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Twisters edged Milan by two shots (110-112). Alli Kate Frilling posted the best score of anyone with a 49, with Carley Frilling registering a 61.
Union City will next play in the annual Patriot Classic at Paris Landing on Tuesday.
HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Four Union City runners – two girls and a pair of boys – medaled at the Covington Invitational on Tuesday.
Ainsley Sadler was seventh with a time of 25:14, and Ainsley Beard placed 15th(27:22) in a field of 81 girls.
Woodrow McKinnis came in sixth among 156 boys, clocked at 19:05 for the Tornadoes. Rushdon Howell made the Top 15 cut, finishing 11th at 20:07.
Andrew Beard (23:20) came in at 37th, while Wrigley Harder (27:15) placed in the middle of the pack.
Union City will next compete on Sept. 10 at Huntingdon.
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
UC 3, Lake Co. 0
It took the Lady Tornadoes less than an hour to overwhelm visiting LC, rolling 25-11, 25-9, and 25-3 to improve to 4-0.
Brianna McBride (18) and Addison Carr (12) combined for 30 service aces to lead Union City. Madie Theobald chipped in with a half-dozen aces, while Carr recorded six assists.
McBride ran off a string of 11 aces in Game 2, while Carr had eight in the third game while serving on 15 winning points.
Allysia Davis was strong at the net with seven kills, and teammate Gracelyn Sims added five. Crickett Washburn handed out four assists.
UC will host Gibson County at 6 p.m. on Thursday to conclude a three-match homestand.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL
UC 23, Hillcrest 13
Aided by eight walks, eight Hillcrest errors, and six hit batsmen, Union City completed a season sweep of the Lady Cougars to win for the third time in four games.
Annie Beth Cruce had a monster game for the Lady Tornadoes, going 5-for-5 with two doubles, five RBIs, and three runs scored. Averi Riley singled, doubled, and scored three times, while Tenley Durham knocked in three runs and scored three.
Sophie Palmer and Ella Grace Howell crossed the plate three times each for UC, while Austyn Dilday, Caylee Luttrell, and Amanda McPhearson all scored twice.
Riley was credited with pitching win, while Dilday picked up the save by recording the final five outs after Hillcrest had closed to within 15-13.
Now 3-6, UC hosts Henry County on Thursday at 5:30.
