Parents of all Union City Schools students must fill out a short mandatory consent form for their student to receive any health care service from a school nurse or other person acting on behalf of the school system.
A recently passed new state law necessitated the form.
Union City Schools Health Coordinator Kristen Miles insists – despite the increased paperwork and bureaucracy – that Union City Schools will continue to service the needs of its students when the proper documentation is on hand.
“Parents rely on us to take care of their children while they are at school,” Miles said. “But now, whether it’s band-aids, ice packs, Tylenol, or Advil, parents must give us permission to treat them in any form.
“The law that was supposed to give more rights to parents concerning their children’s health has backfired when it comes to their student’s time away while they are in school. It will add an unnecessary layer of red tape for us to keep up with over 1700 students’ permission forms, and we must have the help of parents/guardians to do this.
“Union City Schools has always prided itself on taking care of our students in a small-town setting. We will continue to do our very best to do so.”
The form is attached or may be found on the school website (tornadotouch.net) under the Quick Links section with a title of ‘Consent for School Health Services.’
