Big Sandy, Tenn.–Although dwindling in number, a loyal group of people was in attendance at this year’s Old 23rd Homecoming at the historic Mt. Zion Church on Sunday.

The annual Homecoming for the former community is always held the first Sunday in July. This is a tradition which has been held annually since at least 1958.

People in attendance this year were happy that it was not as hot as usual, since there is no air conditioning in the historic church. The day’s activities included a service with Rev. Chad Kennedy providing the sermon and Terry Atchison leading the music. The service is always followed by a potluck supper on the grounds.

Kay and Johnny Foust are among those who attend each year and Kay said, “It was hot but not too bad. It was pleasant out under the trees where we ate.”

This year’s “crowd was down. Each year more and more have died out. There was no one there of our parents’ generation this year. Those still alive are no longer able to attend,” she said

The Old 23rd was a thriving community until the formation of Kentucky Lake in 1945. The historic Mt. Zion Church was built in 1897 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is the only surviving building in the Old 23rd District, an extinct community since 1944.
Much of the former Henry County 23rd district became part of the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge system after the creation of Kentucky Lake. The Mt. Zion Church is located on the Big Sandy Peninsula.
