Union City, Tenn.–There’s been a significant change to Union City’s 2024 high school football schedule.
The Golden Tornadoes will now open their upcoming season with a road game at Murray on Aug. 23.
The Tigers will take the place of Ensworth on UC’s slate. Union City lost last year’s season-opener to the Class 3A private school entry 40-6 at War Memorial Stadium. Both teams went on to advance to the state quarterfinals in their respective divisions.
A late opening on Murray’s 2024 slate presented the opportunity for the Tornadoes and Tigers to schedule a meeting. A contract for the game was finalized late last week.
The two schools have played six times previously – but not since 1928.
UC leads the all-time series 4-2. All of the previous meetings occurred during a 12-year span that began in 1917. The Twisters have shut out Murray in three of their four previous victories.
The Tigers went 7-5 last season, beaten by eventual Class 2A state champion and longtime rival Mayfield in the second round of the Kentucky state playoffs.
Union City’s 2024 schedule will include six teams that made their state playoffs a year ago. The Tornadoes will open the home portion of their schedule when they host University School of Jackson on Aug. 30.
