Memorial Day Service at Fort Donelson National Cemetery

Dover, TN.  — On Monday, May 27, 2024, at 10  AM, Fort Donelson National Cemetery will be the site of its annual memorial service, hosted by the National Park Service and the Stewart County Veterans Affairs Office, with this year’s program facilitated by the Douglas Lyons American Legion Post 72.  Also participating will be other veteran organizations, local civic, and scouting groups.

Guest speaker for the program will be Colonel George Mauldin, United States Army, retired.  Colonel Mauldin retired after 32 in the military serving as a Field Artillery enlisted man before being commissioned as an Infantry Officer. He deployed to Vietnam in 1966 as part of the 1st Calvary Division and deployed again to Vietnam in 1969 in the 9th Infantry Division.  During his career he was Military attaché’ in the U. S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel and in the U.S. Embassy, Sultanate of Oman. He retired after participating in Operation Desert Shield and Storm.

“We invite veterans, active-duty service members, their families, and the public to join us as we pause to remember the millions of service men and women who have served and died in the defense of our nation, providing for, and maintaining the freedoms that we cherish,” shared Brian McCutchen, Superintendent of the Fort Donelson National Cemetery and the Fort Donelson National Battlefield.

Because of Memorial Day occurring in late May, and the national cemetery having minimal shade, those attending are encouraged to dress appropriately, bring bottled water, and, as seating is not provided, consider bringing a lawn chair or blanket.

Any weather related schedule or location changes will be posted on www.nps.gov/fodo or www.facebook
