Addison Carr doubled home Marlee Theobald with the tie-breaking run in the fourth inning, and Union City went on to edge South Fulton 9-8 in high school softball on Tuesday.

The Lady Tornadoes, who improved to 2-0 in District 14A play and 3-5 overall, scored three times in the fourth to rally for the second time.

Marlee Theobald tripled, doubled, drove in three runs, and scored twice to lead the Twister girls. Kennedi Robinson smacked a pair of doubles and had two RBIs, and Carr and Emmaline Qualls scored two times apiece.

Annalece Morton contributed a double as six of Union City’s eight knocks went for extra bases.

Carr (3-2) went the distance to notch the pitching win, striking out seven.

UC will welcome Lake County to Eddlemon-Hawks Field on Thursday afternoon at 5 o’clock.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 7-7, Crockett Co. 6-8

A two-out, seven-run rally in the bottom fifth lifted the Tornadoes to an improbable win in the opener.

Union City pieced together five walks, a pair of hit batsmen, a catcher’s interference, and two hits during its comeback from a 6-0 deficit.

Brody Fields came in with the game-deciding run when Grady Gurley was plunked with the bases loaded.

Kobe Maddox, who went 2-for-3, had one of those hits that drove in two runs in the fifth. Preston Creswell also had two singles in three at-bats, scored a run, and had an RBI.

Jack Vallee pitched an inning in relief of Creswell and got credit for the victory. Of the Cavaliers’ six runs, just one was earned as UC was guilty of four errors.

In the nightcap, CC turned the tables on Union City, pushing across the deciding run with two outs on a bases-loaded hit batsman to cap a game-deciding rally.

The Tornadoes scored four runs in the top of the fourth to erase a 6-3 deficit. UC took advantage of a dozen walks and four hit batters in the contest.

Creswell and Jack Theobald scored twice each, Gurley was credited with two RBIs, and Creswell and Jackson Huffstutter had the Twisters’ only hits.

Japeth Caldwell came on in relief in the final frame and was charged with the pitching loss.

UC (8-2) will play against Gibson County on April 8 in its next outing.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

UC 6, Paducah Tilghman 1 (G)

Paducah Tilghman 7, UC 0 (B)

The Union City girls made it eight straight wins after a 0-2 start to the season with an impressive win over the Blue Tornado girls.

Davey Frankum’s 7-4 tiebreaker win at the No. 3 singles spot had the most suspense of UC’s four individual triumphs. Molly Kizer blanked her foe 8-0 at the fourth position.

Top seed Shelby Bondurant (8-2) and No. 5 Emma Mobbs (8-1) also cruised to victories.

Bondurant and Kizer were plenty good in their No. 1 doubles match, winning 8-3, and the Frankum twins, Dani and Davey, posted an 8-5 victory.

Lyndon Brown and Kobe Kirk had the most competitive matches for the Union City boys (3-7), each coming up short 8-4 in singles play.

Union City will travel to Jackson to play USJ on Thursday.

Tucker Davis drove in Will Ragsdale with the Twisters’ lone run in the fourth.
