Union City, Tenn.–After a pair of losses to open the season, the Union City softball team broke out in a big way.
Five players had three hits in an 18-hit attack, and the Lady Tornadoes scored in every inning but one to beat Peabody 13-7 Thursday at Trenton.
Marlee Theobald had three hits and scored four runs, and Addison Carr knocked in three runs, scored three times, and had three singles to lead UC’s offensive onslaught.
Clare Atwill, Kennedi Robinson, and Madie Theobald also had three hits for the Twister girls, who had seven players collect safeties.
Carr struck out five and allowed four earned runs to get the pitching victory.
Union City capitalized on seven Peabody errors to score five unearned runs.
The Lady Tornadoes will play at Ripley on Monday before returning home to face Westview on Tuesday.
MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL
UC 20, Obion County 1
The Tornadoes continued their torrid start to their 2024 season, improving to 4-0 with a lopsided mercy-rule victory over OC.
Kobe Maddux went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI as Union City pounded out 12 hits and benefitted from a dozen Rebel errors and five walks.
Will Kail doubled, singled, and scored three times, while Brayden Marshall also crossed the pay station three times. Preston Creswell tripled, singled, and had two ribbies, and Jackson Huffstutter and Grady Gurley knocked home two tallies apiece for the victors.
Jack Theobald, Japeth Caldwell, and Bryce Burnett scored twice each.
Jack Vallee tossed three frames with five strikeouts and just three hits allowed to notch the pitching triumph.
UC plays at Trenton on Monday and will host the same opponent on Tuesday.
HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER
UC 1, Peabody 1 (tie)
The Tornadoes are now 2-0-2 after playing to a deadlock for the second time this week.
Gavin Morgan took a feed from Kha’Zarion Scates and found the goal early in the second half for Union City’s only score in the physically played contest.
Marcos Landeros and Silverio Acevedo combined for the Twisters’ other five shots on goal.
Jayce Rogers had four saves.
“I couldn’t be any prouder of the entire team for staying levelheaded throughout the whole match,” UC head coach Travis VanHooser said. “We continue to make strides in putting together a complete game.”
Union City will host Gibson County on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS
Mayfield 5, UC 2 (G)

The Union City girls put up a good fight against another top-flight Kentucky foe, with most matches highly competitive.
Molly Kizer picked up an 8-1 singles win over Tyler Sloan at the No. 4 spot, and twin sisters Dani and Davey Frankum teamed to beat Sloan and Sadie Sutla 8-6 in the second doubles slot.
Dani Frankum battled Charli Stanley to the end at the No. 2 singles position before dropping an 8-6 decision, and Kizer and Shelby Bondurant were competitive at the No. 1 doubles spot despite losing 8-4.
On the boys’ side, Paul Martin Tohn went toe-to-toe against the Cardinals’ Gavan Fisher at the five-seed before falling short 8-6.
The Twister teams will again seek their first victories of the young season on Saturday at South Gibson County.
