Union City, Tenn.–With the current school year barely half over, Union City Schools already has a plan in place for 2024-25.

The UC school board gave unanimous approval on a calendar for next year at its most recent meeting.

Calling it “a challenge tougher than most years,” Assistant Director of Schools Michael Paul Miller detailed the future calendar prior to the vote of board members.

The first day of classes for the 2024-25 school year is set for Aug. 8. Registration will take place two days earlier (Aug. 6) at the three UCSS campuses. Teachers will be present for in-service two days in July, then on Aug. 1, 2, and 5.

Students will receive 178 days of classroom instruction – two less than in recent years – with a pair of professional development days for teachers taking the place of those days. The two semesters will be comprised of 89 days each in the classroom.

“The way the calendar fell this year made it a little more difficult,” Miller said. “We made a few subtle changes to keep things as much in line with the past as we could.

“We still believe it’s a really good schedule. It provides excellent educational opportunities for both our students and staff and allows our teachers to develop plans for their individual classrooms.”

The calendar includes the traditional school breaks – Fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring – as well as observance of Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, and Good Friday.

Fall Break is scheduled for Oct. 9-11, Thanksgiving Break for Nov. 27-29, Christmas Break for Dec. 19-Jan. 6, and Spring Break for April 7-11.

Teachers will return from Christmas Break on Jan. 6 for a professional development day before students return to class the following day.

“We were able to keep with the traditions of not starting school before Aug. 1 and dismissing for the year before Memorial Day (May 26),” Miller added. “I know everyone will enjoy our breaks, and they are well-timed in the grand scheme of things.”

Graduation is set for May 17 for the Class of 2025.

More than five inclement weather days are subject to be made up at the end of the year.
