McKenzie, Tenn.–Homeowners are thankful to members of the Springville Volunteer Fire Department for their quick action this morning, which saved property and may have saved lives in the McKenzie area.
Off-duty Captain Lenny McFadden Jr. and Firefighter Dave LeClair happened to be driving down Hwy. 22 toward Hwy. 70 from Hwy. 79 when LeClair saw flames on the front porch of a house.
They turned around, parking on the side of Hwy. 22, and ran to house. They discovered the top of a chicken coop fully in flames and flames were traveling up the front of the house.
McFadden said, “Dave began knocking on the door while I grabbed snow and threw it on the coop.”
Meanwhile, the homeowner came out and saw flames and ran back in the house to get buckets of water. The three were able to pull the aluminum siding away from the structure to pour water in to cool the wall.
Upon getting the fire out the firefighters found the heat lamp for the chickens had caught the wood chips on fire.
Jason from McKenzie Fire & Rescue showed up to the scene and the two Springville firefighters turned it over to him. “We made Jason aware that one of the children stated there was a smoke smell in the bed room on the other side of where the fire was,” he said.
Holly Charland, Springville Assistant Fire Chief, said, “Two guys on our department did a good deed this morning and I wanted to share it with you.”
