Paris, Tenn.–A Paris home was found to be housing more that 30 animals during a check by local law enforcement. Paris Police officers were called to the scene of 813A Curtis Street to assist Animal Control Officer Mark Mead. Mead had located 10 dogs outside of this residence that were malnourished and had no access to food or water.
As Officers attempted to contact a resident of the home, they were able to observe through the windows and doors of the house that there were many more animals inside the house either running loose or locked in cages. The animals inside were also malnourished and in obvious distress.
Upon entering the house, there were 20 more dogs, 6 cats, 2 chickens, and a bird found inside in poor condition.
While officers were investigating on the scene, three individuals arrived in a vehicle and claimed to be the residents of the property.
These individuals were Brittany Shaf, Dakota Shaf, and Montez Hurd. The three claimed that not all the animals were theirs but some were strays they had taken in and advised that they had only recently moved into the house.
The three individuals were arrested and charged with Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and Cruelty to animals. Additionally, Dakota Shaf was charged with Simple Possession for a small amount of marijuana located in the house. Each were booked in the Henry County jail and set a $15,000 bond.
Animals were taken to the City of Paris Animal Shelter, with the animals that were in the worst condition being taken to a local veterinarian.
Chief Ricky Watson said, “I am very thankful that we were able to save these animals before their conditions could get any worse.” Citizens who suspect that an animal in their area may be suffering from neglect or abuse should contact their local animal control agency about their concerns. The Paris Police department is committed to the protection of life and property and we appreciate all of the assistance from outside agencies as we resolve this matter.”
