Tennessee Music Legend Tina Turner Dead At 83

Tennessee Music Legend Tina Turner has died at the age of 83.

Born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee, and raised in nearby Nutbush, she was one of the most successful recording artists of all time. She was a a two-time Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer and a 12-time Grammy winner who wowed audiences all over the world.

A statement on her official Facebook page reads, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”

She died Tuesday at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, near Zurich.

Her publicist Bernard Doherty announced the death in a statement but did not provide the cause. She had a stroke in recent years and was known to be struggling with a kidney disease and other illnesses.

The White House called the death of Tina Turner “a massive, massive loss” on Wednesday after learning of the rock singer’s passing. “Tina Turner was an icon, a music icon who had many stages, many amazing moments in her career,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. “Very sad to hear the news. I was a huge fan of Tina Turner. As you can see from my reaction, that is the first I’m hearing of it. And it is a massive loss, massive loss to the communities that that loved her, certainly to the music industry.”
