Paris, Tenn.–Two Paris Police officers were recognized for their work in saving the life of a six-month-old baby.
Patrolman Blake Barrett received te Life-Saving Award and Patrolman Crystal Sheets received a letter of recognition this week during National Police Officer Week.
On February 11, Paris officers were dispatched to a home for a 6-month-old having difficulty breathing. Ptl Blake Barrett was the first officer to arrive on the scene. Ptl. Barrett entered the residence and went to the back bedroom where the mother was performing CPR.
Police Chief Ricky Watson said, “At that time, the baby was unresponsive. Ptl Barrett immediately took over CPR and continued for several minutes until EMS arrived. During the incident, Ptl Barrett remained calm and took control of the situation.”
Ptl Barrett “demonstrated professionalism during this high stress incident. His swift actions helped with the saving of the life of the 6-month-old,” Watson said.
On March 2, Sgt Wood went to check on the baby. The mother advised Sgt Wood that her baby is at home and is doing well. The mother of the child told Sgt Wood that she believes Ptl Barrett should be recognized for his response and actions. Ptl Barrett’s current Supervisor, Lt. Jeff Smith, recommended that he receive the Life-Saving Award.
During the same incident, Ptl Crystal Sheets arrived a short time after Ptl. Barrett. Watson said, “Ptl Sheets immediately went in the residence and began assisting Ptl Barrett, who was performing CPR on the baby. During the course of the incident, Ptl Sheets was able to console the mother and get her to calm down so information could be gathered on the baby’s medical history. Ptl Sheets showed compassion to the mother and was able to comfort her while first responders were still on the scene performing CPR. Ptl Sheets demonstrated professionalism and devotion to duty during this high stress incident.”
