Union City, Tenn.–Union City’s 2023 softball and baseball seasons came to a close with Friday losses in the District 12AA Tournament.
The Lady Tornadoes fell to Gibson County, 8-3, at Huntingdon, while the UC baseballers dropped an 11-1 decision to Huntingdon at Milan.
Union City finished 10-15 in baseball and 5-18 on the softball diamond.
The Tornado soccer team concluded its regular season with a 3-1 victory over Ripley.
UC will play at Westview Tuesday in the opening round of the district tournament.
The following is a recap of those Friday contests:
HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER
UC 3, Ripley 1
Angel Martinez, Cohen Robinson, and Ka’Jaylon Bell scored second-half goals for the Tornadoes, who’ll enter postseason play with a 5-7 mark.
Silverio Acevedo and Joseph Lattus had assists to set up two of Union City’s scores.
Jayce Rogers turned away 10 shots in goal for the victors.
Head coach Travis VanHooser singled out the play of Gavin Morgan, Carter Wilson and Beck Tanner as critical to the UC victory.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
GC 8, UC 3
The youthful Twister girls – who had just one senior (Bayleigh Long) on this year’s roster – fell behind 5-0 in their elimination game against Gibson County and never recovered.
Addison Carr had an RBI single, and Kennedi Robinson and Marlee Theobald both singled and scored for UC. Madie Theobald and Caitlyn Hoffman knocked in runs.
Carr was tagged with the pitching loss.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Huntingdon 11, UC 1
Union City got its lone run in the top of the first, then saw the Mustangs score 11 unanswered to win via the mercy rule.
Hayden Searcy doubled and scored for the Twisters, scoring on Will Ragsdale’s sacrifice fly.
Kyler Southerland and Luke Joslin had UC’s other hits in the contest.
Ragsdale was the losing pitcher.
The contest was the last in a UCHS uniform for seniors Searcy and Landon Hauhe.
