HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

Obion Central 6, UC 0

Union City gamely battled to a scoreless tie at the intermission before the Rebels scored early and often in the second half.

The Tornadoes were without arguably their best player, Miguel Sanchez, the program’s No. 2 all-time goal-scorer. Sanchez suffered a broken leg in a pick-up game last weekend and will be lost for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on Thursday.

Jayce Rogers had 14 saves in goal for UC. Marcos Landeros attempted the Twisters’ lone shot on goal.

“Offensively, I put us in some situations we weren’t used to,” Union City head coach Travis VanHooser said. “That being said, I thought the guys did an excellent job of executing our plan.

“We played some of our best soccer of the season in the first half. Defensively, all 11 guys were engaged and moving to the ball. Unfortunately, we couldn’t carry the momentum we built in the first half into the second half.”

Now 4-3, Union City will play at Ripley Thursday.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Milan 5, UC 4 (9)

After pushing across the go-ahead run via an error in the top of the second extra frame, Union City saw the host Lady Bulldogs score the game-winning tally in the bottom of the ninth on a misplay.

The Twister girls made five errors in all to fall to 3-10.

Emmaline Qualls went 2-for-4 and Marlee Theobald had a pair of hits with each scoring a run. Kennedi Robinson’s RBI double in the sixth capped a three-run rally and gave UC a brief 3-2 lead.

Mattie Smith was the tough luck losing pitcher, giving up just three earned runs in 8 1/3 innings.

Union City plays host to Crockett County Friday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Huntingdon 9, UC 5

The Mustangs salvaged a split of the District 12-AA series after UC won 6-3 at home on Monday.

Tucker Davis went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and both Will Ragsdale and Landon Hauhe had a pair of hits for the Tornadoes. Barrett Cox crossed the plate twice.

Cox was the losing pitcher, touched for 11 hits and eight earned runs.

Union City saw its second three-game winning streak of the season snapped and is now 7-6 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The Twisters have a make-up game at home today against Lake County.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

Mayfield 6, UC 1 (G)

Mayfield 5, UC 1 (B)

Union City lost to Mayfield for the second time this season to fall to 4-5 and 3-5, respectively.

UC continues a busy week Thursday with matches at Huntingdon before participating in the annual USJ Invitational in Jackson this weekend.
