Union City, Tenn.–Membership in the Union City High School Beta Club does not come easy.
Thus, the inclusion of 30 new members Wednesday was cause for a celebration.
Club sponsor Ashley Martin and the remainder of the prestigious society welcomed a collection of freshmen and sophomores with a formal ceremony and refreshments that was enjoyed by a number of parents.
Traditional track students must keep a 90 average and have no ‘Ds’ or ‘Fs’ on their report card as part of club requirements. Magnet School track students must keep an 85 average and with no ‘Ds’ or ‘Fs.’

In unison, the new members recited the club’s oath before receiving a certificate, membership card and lapel pin. President Reagan Durkee and senior club members Owen Rodgers, Emma Powell and Kate Schlager assisted Martin with the ceremony, detailing the four pillars of Beta: Achievement, Character, Leadership and Service.
The UCHS Beta Club now has 80 active members.
“As always, we are extremely proud of the hard work and character that each of our inductees possess,” Martin said. “We look forward to seeing how they assist and lead in our community and in the future they will all create for themselves.”
The group will continue to be actively involved in several community service projects as individuals and as a group – including the annual spring clean-up at the Obion County Public Library. Previously this school year, club members hosted a Halloween Trunk or Treat event at UC Elementary School.
