West Kentucky Connects With Gig Internet

Trenton, Tenn. – Gibson Electric Membership Corporation and its not-for-profit broadband subsidiary, Gibson Connect, are actively constructing their fiber-to-the home network in western Kentucky and have already connected more than 100 members to high-speed internet service.

“We’re thrilled to be providing this important service to our Gibson EMC member-owners,” according to Dan Rodamaker, Gibson EMC and Gibson Connect President and CEO. “It is a game changer for our members and our communities.”

Bruce Kimbell, Gibson EMC and Gibson Connect board member, agrees.  “Right here in western Kentucky, our members are enjoying Gig internet service.  Our fiber based high-speed internet service is connecting our members to a world of knowledge, entertainment, markets and jobs.”

“The buildout is progressing well,” according to Charles Phillips, Gibson EMC VP of Technical Services and Gibson Connect VP of Operations. “Network cable construction or installing the fiber on the pole is the first of four steps.  Next crews will splice the fiber, put in service drops and finally do in-home installations.”

Phillips says the network cable construction has been completed on the circuit east of the Clinton substation going toward Fulgham and crews are now doing splicing and service drops. Gibson Connect is connecting the first subscribers in that area, he says.

“Construction crews also are currently working on the circuits from the Clinton substation going south toward Fulton and west toward Oakton,” Phillips explained. “We’re pulling in additional crews to help with service drops in that area; and in April, we expect to start running some of the overhead service drops on the Fulton feeder.”

“By late April, we plan to begin building the network cable construction for the Hickman Zone,” Phillips said. “We plan to complete the network cable buildout in the Hickman Zone by mid-June, then start network cable construction in the Arlington Zone and complete it by August.”

Phillips said the next two steps in the process, splicing and service drops, will typically be completed within about three months after the network cable construction has been completed. The final phase, in-home installations, takes another six weeks or so to complete.
