BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the fourth consecutive week, the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team had a member of its freshmen class earn a weekly honor courtesy of the Ohio Valley Conference as forward Sharnecce Currie-Jelks notched her second straight OVC Freshman of the Week accolade.
A native of Jackson, Tenn., Currie-Jelks is enjoying an impressive stretch in her debut collegiate season while riding a current five-game double-digit scoring streak. After also picking up OVC Freshman of the Week honors seven days ago, Currie-Jelks was consistent once again for the Skyhawks after averaging 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while recording four steals and four blocks in a pair of contests. She was efficient from the floor where she made 13-of-24 field goal attempts – shooting at a 54.2 percent clip.
Currie-Jelks opened the week by tallying 13 points and nine rebounds while setting a new career-high with four blocks against former OVC rival Murray State. Later in the week, she helped propel the Skyhawks to a road win over SEC foe Vanderbilt by notching 13 points and nine rebounds in the victory.
Through the first four weeks of the season, UT Martin has claimed all four OVC Freshman of the Week honors with teammates Currie-Jelks and Kenley McCarn each earning a pair.
UT Martin is currently on a break for finals before returning to action with a lengthy road trip beginning at South Dakota State on Monday, Dec. 12.
