Union City, Tenn.–Opportunities other than higher education are readily available for young people pondering their next step after graduation.

Members of Union City High School’s Mechanical Electrical Plumbing (MEP) Systems class got a first-hand look at those possibilities recently when they toured two local businesses as part of Manufacturing Day.

The event, sponsored by Northwest Tennessee Workforce Development, provided students an in-depth opportunity to ask management teams at Thor Boats and Greenfield Products questions to see where the many skills they are learning in the class might fit.

The first-year course at UCHS is taught by Coby Watts.

Manufacturing Month is an occasion during which industries open their doors and showcase the potential of modern manufacturing in an attempt to foster interest in those careers.

Lana Wood, the Business Services Representative for Workforce Innovations Inc., led the tour of Union City students of the two local factories.

The goal of the field trip was to explore innovative ideas and collaborate new technologies in the workforce driving the economy in Union City.

Each year thousands of manufacturers open their doors to give a glimpse of their businesses to the next generation of skilled workers in an attempt to inspire and attract interest.
