BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Lynette Hawkins, a redshirt sophomore on the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team, was named Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday by the league office.
Hawkins becomes the 14th player in school history to claim OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors. She is the second Skyhawk to secure an OVC weekly award in 2022, joining Megan Drake (Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13).
The 5-9 Aurora, Colo. native helped UT Martin to its fourth shutout of the 2022 campaign last Sunday at Southern Indiana – a 1-0 victory. Hawkins logged the full 90 minutes for the first time all season and helped the stingy Skyhawk defense limit the Screaming Eagles to just six shots, only two of which were on goal.
Additionally, Hawkins assisted on the lone goal of the match – a score by Izzy Patterson in the fifth minute. As a result, UT Martin posted its first OVC victory of the fall.
Hawkins has come on strong recently for the Skyhawks, starting in each of the last dozen matches. She has tallied 816 minutes on the pitch this season.
UT Martin closes out the regular season with a pair of matches this week, traveling to SIUE on Thursday, Oct. 20 before hosting Southeast Missouri on Sunday, Oct. 23.
