Union City, Tenn.–Union City High School will be well represented in the Northwest Tennessee Honor Choir.
Six UCHS singers were selected from more than 500 area students who auditioned for the prestigious group and will be part of the talented 200-member choir to perform later this fall.
Among the Union City students chosen for the honor were:
Addison Kitchen (Soprano 2) – 1st chair
Chloe Meade (Alto 1) – 7th chair
M’Kaylie Ingram (Alto 1) – 26th chair
Myranda Parr (Alto 2) – 23rd chair
Colton Gary (Bass 1) – 22nd chair
Hannah Moon (Alto 1) – 3rd alternate
In-person auditions were held for the first time in three years recently at Union University in Jackson. Tryouts were held virtually for the past two years due to the pandemic.
Students were required to learn excerpts from six choral pieces, three of which were in a foreign language. Chorus/Drama teacher Allison Butner worked tirelessly after school alongside the UC contingent to learn the collegiate-level choral material.
“To have two Top 10 finishes, and a First Chair student, is amazing,” Butner said. “Our students competed against choir students from schools, both public and private, with well-known choral programs.
“They picked only the Top 35 from each section of sopranos and altos and the Top 25 scores of the bass section. Our kids did great, and I am extremely proud of them.”
Students will participate in multiple rehearsal sessions over three days before the group performs its annual concert on Saturday, November 19, in Jackson.
