MADISON, Ill. – Senior Jacob Uehlein brought home the fifth top-10 finish of his illustrious career today as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team wrapped up the SIUE Dolenc Invitational at Gateway National.
A Tullahoma, Tenn. native, Uehlein shot a 72 (+1) during today’s third and final round, producing 15 pars and one birdie. That performance gave him a 54-hole total of 214 (+1) for the tournament, ranking seventh in the field of 96 participants. Overall, Uehlein ranked fifth in the event in par-3 scoring (3.07, +1), 10th in birdies (10) and 11th in par-4 scoring (4.07, +2) – leading the Skyhawks in all three statistical categories.
“Jacob played outstanding this week,” UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. “If a few putts had fallen in today’s final round, it could have been even more special. He was consistent all week and earned his top-10 finish.”
The Skyhawk scoring lineup managed a 293 (+9) for the day – one stroke shy of their best round in the tournament. UT Martin’s cumulative total of 883 (+31) placed the Skyhawks eighth in the 15-team field.
Bryson Morrell was UT Martin’s best performer today as the senior out of Knoxville, Tenn. rolled in four birdies on the way to a 70 (-1). After Uehlein’s 72, the Skyhawks’ team score consisted of Jonathan Xoinis’ 75 (one birdie) and Cayden Chambers’ 76 (two birdies).
Following Uehlein, three strokes separated the other five UT Martin representatives on the final individual leaderboard. Xoinis led the entire tournament with 39 pars and while Morrell ranked fifth in par-3 scoring (3.07, +1) as that duo each carded a 225 (+12). Garrett Chumley, who competed on an individual basis, shot a 73 with three birdies today to finish at 226 (+13). Chambers guided the Skyhawks in par-5 scoring (4.75, -3) and produced an overall tally of 227 (+14), which was also the same total score for Ethan Ray after his 79 in Round 3.
“We have to be more disciplined and play with more confidence,” Swafford said. “However, we’ll continue to learn and grow from our mistakes and be better for it. There’s too much talent on our team to be finishing where we are.”
UT Martin will step away from official competition for nearly three weeks before resuming its fall schedule at the Pinetree Intercollegiate, hosted by Kennesaw State on Oct. 17-18.
