Union City, Tenn.–First-graders at Union City Elementary School used their minds when learning about human bodies.

Students recently wrapped up a domain study on the five body systems by creating their own model of one of the systems. They were allowed to receive help at home from a parent or guardian and encouraged to be innovative in all facets of their entries.

The students had their choice of the skeletal system, the muscular system, the digestive system, the circulatory system and/or the nervous system for their project. In some instances, they were provided with needed supplies for their exhibits, crafted displays and posters.

The finished work was put on display in the school library for the remainder of the school to see.

During the study, students learned about the fundamental parts and the functions of the five body systems, along with care and maintenance.

Knowledge teacher Jessica Graham said the change from past conclusions to the human body study was well-received.

“Giving the students freedom to be creative or simple, and allowing their parents or guardians to help them with the project was a good idea,” she said. “Our scores for the section were considerably better than they have been, and I believe the students’ attention to all details was aided by this.

“Most of them went above and beyond with their efforts, and it showed.”
