Union City, Tenn.–The Union City High School girls’ golf team is District 13A Tournament champions.
The Lady Tornado trio of Alli Kate Frilling, Mimi Jenkins and Adaline Rice finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the individual competition to help UC to a seven-stroke team victory over McKenzie Monday at the Weakley County Country Club in Sharon.
Like the girls’ squad, the Union City boys also earned a spot in next week’s regionals with a second-place finish in Monday’s district event.
Nolan Chandler won a playoff to secure individual runner-up honors, while fellow senior Reese Paschall was fourth in the field for the Twisters.
Both UCHS teams will now move on to the Region 7-A Tournament next Monday at The Farms in Dyersburg.
The Purple and Gold contingent weathered uncharacteristic steamy conditions for mid-September in a solid day of play in Monday’s 18-hole event.
Frilling, slowed recently by a wrist injury, nonetheless posted the Lady Tornadoes’ best score with a 94 (44-50). Jenkins was a stroke behind her teammate (42-53) with a 95 that gave UC a 189 team total. Rice shot 98 (45-53) as all three Twister girls broke 100.
McKenzie finished with a 196 as a team.
Chandler, a postseason veteran for the Union City boys, edged Logan Cromika of South Fulton in a playoff for the No. 2 individual spot. He shot 39-44 for an 83 as part of the Tornadoes’ 366 team total.
Paschall was consistent with a pair of 42s for an 84 overall – good enough for fourth. Other UC scores included Landon Hauhe (52-47—99), Logan Vincent (48-52—100) and Jack Harris (52-48—100).
Westview took home the boys’ title with a 336, while South Fulton was third at 380. Both also qualified for region play.
McKenzie (394), Huntingdon (468), and Obion Central (468) rounded out the field.
“I was proud of our kids for continuing to grind in some really tough conditions,” Union City head coach Jason Qualls said. “We came here expecting to move on to the next round, and we accomplished those goals.”
Next week’s regional will begin at 9 a.m.
