Union City Tenn.–Plan B worked out perfectly for the Union City High School Band.

Forced to scramble for an alternative venue when Saturday’s UT Martin contest was canceled a few days earlier, the Marching Tornadoes found a late spot in the 8th annual South Gibson County Hornet Invitational.

The UC crew – competing for the first time this season – made the most of the opportunity.

The Purple People were crowned Grand Champion of the event and earned five other awards in the competition.

Among those honors were:

  • Overall High Music Award
  • Overall High Visual Award
  • 1st Place Overall Percussion
  • 3rd Place Overall Color Guard
  • 5th Place Overall Drum Major

Veteran UCHS Band Director Jason Deem was understandably pleased with his group’s efforts.

“I am extremely proud of the students for their accolades this past weekend,” Deem said. “It is our job as directors to give the students all the ‘tools’ to be successful. It is, however, the students must use those ‘tools’ in performance.

“Our students have worked through adverse heat and rain for the first part of the season since our first rehearsal in June. The awards the students received in this contest are a testament to hard work, dedication and pride the band has shown thus far.

“I am excited to see what the future holds for this group of outstanding students.”

Union City will host the WTSBOA Marching Festival as part of its own Invitational next Saturday at War Memorial Stadium.
