MURRAY, Ky. – In a matchup of former Ohio Valley Conference rivals, the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s soccer team doubled its scoring output on the season behind goals by Megan Drake and Makayla Robinson while pushing Murray State to a 2-2 tie on the road.
The Skyhawks (0-3-2) scored two goals in their final road contest of their non-conference slate Sunday afternoon – ranking as a new season-high for goals scored – before settling for the team’s second tie of the season against the Racers.
UT Martin made the most of its shot attempts, scoring two goals on five attempts. Robinson led the team with two attempts while scoring her first goal of the season. Drake also tallied a goal on her lone shot attempt while Izzy Patterson and Emma Elliott joined in the action with one attempt each. Contributing to the team’s offensive push was Alba Delgado who tallied her second assist of the season.
Freshman Poppy Bastock allowed two goals but tallied five saves in 90 minutes of action.
Drake put the Skyhawks on the board first with a goal in the 28th minute to take a 1-0 advantage when she curled in a corner kick into the top right corner of the net for her second score of the season. The lead would remain in the visitor’s favor until the Racers found the equalizer right before halftime with a penalty kick goal by Morgan Bodker in the 44th minute.
The score remained tied until the 58th minute when Robinson received a cross from Delgado which she placed in the goal for her fourth career score to take a 2-1 lead. The Skyhawk clung to that lead in the final minutes as they searched for their first win of the season but a header by Chloe Barnthouse in the 87th minute knotted the score up and resulted in an eventual 2-2 tie when the final horn blew.
UT Martin will return home to close out the non-conference portion of its schedule with three consecutive matches at Skyhawk Field beginning with a matchup against Indiana State on Thursday, Sept. 8.
