MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team placed seven shots on goal Wednesday evening but could not find the back of the net before ultimately falling to former rival Austin Peay by a final margin of 2-0.
The Skyhawks (0-3-1) tallied a season-high 19 shot attempts in the contest, outshooting the visiting Govs by six, but could not beat the keeper to break into the scoring column. The trio of Izzy Patterson, Megan Drake and Emma Elliott each notched four shot attempts while Drake placed a game-high three shots on goal.
After both teams took a scoreless tie into halftime, it was Austin Peay who broke the stalemate just over 10 minutes into the second half. Anna McPhie got the visitors on the board after rebounding her header attempt and firing a shot past the keeper in the 57th minute.
The margin remained at one for a long stretch before the Govs added its second strike in the 80th minute. McPhie completed her strong evening by playing a ball into the box where Alec Baumgardt connected with her right foot and laced it into the left corner of the net to bring the score to 2-0.
With the win, the Governors (1-1-3) picked up their first win of the season while goalkeeper Chloe Dion notched her third shutout of 2022.
UT Martin hits the road for the final time in its non-conference slate on Sunday, Sept. 4 when traveling to regional rival Murray State. First touch is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
