A number of Union City High School students have put money in their pockets by performing well in the classroom.
Principal Jacob Cross awarded 34 seniors a $100 bill at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year last week, continuing an annual incentive tradition for scoring well on the ACT. Students received the cash for either making 21 or better on the ACT or improving their score on the test by three points or better from the first time it was taken.
Five of those seniors are already members of the school’s prestigious 30+ Club, and the total number of students honored represents more than one-third of this year’s senior class.
Cross also handed out more than $6,000 on Wednesday to UCHS students who performed admirably on end of course (EOC) testing last year. Those who made 3 on the final exam received $25, while students who scored a 4 got $50 for each test on which they scored highly.
In all, there were 185 test scores to fit in that elite category.
“We’re certainly proud of all our kids who used hard work and focus to take advantage of these incentives,” Cross said. “They’ve been inspired, and it shows.
“The $100 is more of an immediate reward. The real significance of making 21 on the ACT is that it unlocks a great deal of financial aid with the Hope Scholarship.”
Among those seniors awarded $100 were Carson Allgier, Toni Armstrong, Naryah Avent, Lainey Barker, Jada Beeler, Amari Bonds, Khali Brooks, Mason Carriere, Nolan Chandler and Kate Crabtree.
Also on the list were Gracie Darnall, Alyssa Durham, Reagan Durkee, Leah Beth Edmaiston, Natalie Fowler, Charley Frankum, Kelsey Garland, Tanner Haley, Jose Hipolito and Hayden Kennedy and Bayleigh Long.
Rounding out the honorees were Brendan Meade, Chloe Meade, Hayden Moon, Morgan Palmer, Emma Powell, Gunner Presson, Owen Rodgers, Jocelyn Ruiz, Miguel Sanchez-Cruz, Kate Schlager, Gage Smith, Madeline Underwood and Charlton Wisener.
