Paris, Tenn.–City of Paris government officials and employees are mourning the loss of long-time city attorney Fred McLean who passed away on Saturday evening, July 16.
In a press release issued today, City Manager Kim Foster said, “Fred had been the City’s attorney for over 40 years. Not only did he provide legal advice and assistance, but he was also a friend and mentor to many Commissioners, City Managers, and employees over the years.
“I never had a question for Fred that he couldn’t find the answer to within minutes. He had files on everything city related and could lay his hands on whatever he needed at a moment’s notice. Fred taught me so much and was brutally honest with me when I needed him to be. I considered Fred a true friend and I am heartbroken that he is gone,” Foster said.
Earlier this year Fred had quietly announced his intention to retire, not only as city attorney, but from his law practice as well at the end of this year. Plans were already in the works to begin looking for his replacement as the city’s attorney this month so someone could be selected and have plenty of time to work with Fred through the transition.
Filling his shoes will be very difficult, Foster said.
“Anyone who knew Fred knew of his love of Christmas. He loved to decorate, he hosted a Christmas open house each year for his clients and friends, and he had enough holiday clothing to wear something festive every day throughout the season. In honor of our friend and colleague and his affinity for the holiday, the Eiffel Tower will be lit red and green this week”, Foster said.
