The Jackson Symphony will present a free community concert on the Court Square in Huntingdon on Thursday evening July 21 beginning at 6:30 p.m. “Symphony on the Move” is an hour-long event sponsored by Huntingdon’s Paula Atkins and Clarksburg Mayor Howell Wayne Todd in cooperation with the Dixie and the Town of Huntingdon. In announcing the event, Mrs. Atkins said “We saw an opportunity to use a spot on the Symphony’s summer schedule, and I called my friend Howell Todd to see what he thought about us covering the cost. He said he was “all in”, and we took it from there.” “The arts are such an important part of our lives, whether we even realize it or not, and to bring something like the Jackson Symphony to town is very special.”
Todd said his response to Mrs. Atkins was immediate. “Paula and I are no different from many Carroll Countians who are appreciative of the role good classical music plays in our own lives. We wanted to make an effort to have it available to our local friends. Music has been so important to me all my life, and good classical music ranks right up there very close to the old hymns in providing a good tonic for my soul.” Todd said.
Sherry Freeman, Executive Director of the Symphony, said “We are excited to bring our “Symphony on the Move” community concert to Huntingdon. This concert is our 42nd community concert. These concerts are filled with recognizable tunes from musicals, today’s top hits and a beautiful blend of classical pieces. This concert represents all genres of music and is sure to entertain a variety of age groups.”
Angela DeMaris said The Dixie is thrilled to partner with the Jackson Symphony and said the historic Carroll County Court House will be the perfect background for this free concert. She commented “What a great way to spend a gorgeous summer evening surrounded by your friends and family all while listening to beautiful music!! Event-goers can also plan to eat and shop at many of our local businesses”
Todd encouraged people to “come in their casual summer attire of tee shirts, polos, shorts, and flip flops, along with a comfortable lawn chair, and maybe a fan, to enjoy the music.” He said “This is a great way to enjoy a free summer evening with the family and listen to some great music. Tell your neighbors; tell your church friends, post it on Facebook.”
Atkins and Todd both said they had no idea what to expect for attendance. Both said if even 50 people showed up it would be worth it. They expressed deep appreciation for the assistance of Angela DeMaris at the Dixie and Kim Carter at City Hall in providing the Court Square area for the event. In case of inclement weather, the Dixie will be an alternative. Questions may be directed to The Dixie on the Court Square at 731.986.2100 or go to www.dixiepac.net
