Big Sandy, Tenn.–Despite the heat, there was a good-sized crowd for the annual Mt. Zion Church Homecoming in the “Old 23rd District” July 4. Historically, family members of the people who lived in the Old 23rd District gather each Fourth of July for preaching, old-time singing and a potluck lunch under the trees. The church building and pews were built in 1897. Needless to say, there is no air-conditioning in the church. It’s the only building still standing in the Old 23rd District. (Candi Collier photo).
