Paris, Tenn.–The “summer slide” is a term that describes the educational regression that children can experience during summer months when school is not in session. The Historic Atkins-Porter Neighborhood Association (HAPNA) can help children stay engaged with fun, learning activities in the HAPNA Botanical Garden.
In 2021, the group partnered with the W.G. Rhea Public Library and hosted Children’s Story Hour in the botanical garden, according to HAPNA President Rachel Terrell. “This was extremely successful, so this year, we added “Tree Talk,” a series from the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge,” she said.
W.G. Rhea Children’s Librarian Kayla Nation, will read children’s books weekly and bring related crafts for the youngsters. New this year, Refuge Ranger Joan Howe will offer fun presentations and hands-on activities about all things tree related. Sessions are aimed at children K-6th grade.
The Children’s Story Hour will take place on Mondays, June 13, 20, 27 and July 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the garden at 311 Jackson Street in the Historic Atkins-Porter Neighborhood. Ranger Howe’s programs will be held each Thursday in June at 10:30 in the garden. An adult must accompany all children. Adults should bring their own chairs. All events are free.
“We hope these events encourage parents and caregivers to take part in other outstanding programs at our local library and wildlife refuge,” says Terrell. “There are endless things to see and do at the W.G. Rhea Public Library in Downtown Paris and at the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, just 15 minutes from Paris. Both are free, fun and engaging for children of all ages.”
