Union City, Tenn.–Second-grade teachers at Union City Elementary School have “dropped some serious knowledge” on their students this year.

Those lessons were well-received and on display in the first-ever Knowledge Bowl, hosted recently by teachers Angie Callens and Kristy Long.

Four students from each of the six second-grade classes at UCES were chosen to compete after they best answered a series of questions from the CKLA Knowledge strand of that curriculum. The remainder of their classmates and their teachers served as an audience during the finals portion of the competition.

Layne Jorge won first place in the inaugural event, with Willow Craddock coming in second and Aaron Nipp third.

A variety of topics were on the question list for all two dozen competitors to have made the final round.

The knowledge portion is a part of the ELA (English Language Arts) side of the curriculum but is rooted in the subject matter of science and social studies. Students have heard read-alouds on many subjects, including cycles in nature, insects and the human body in science. For social studies, they have gained knowledge of ancient Greek civilization, Greek myths, the War of 1812, Westward Expansion and the Civil War.

Callens and Long each commended students for their attentiveness and support of all winners and other contestants.
