Union City softball lived to play another day.
The Lady Tornadoes topped Gibson County 7-2 in a District 12AA Tournament elimination game Monday night in Martin.
UC improved to 16-11 on the season and will now face Milan tonight at 7 in another win-or-go-home contest. The two teams split a pair of regular-season meetings.
A five-run second inning and strong pitching by Sophie Theobald Monday propelled the Twister girls to the next round of the postseason.
Emmaline Qualls went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Alli Kate Frilling had two hits and knocked in two runs to pace Union City offensively against GC. Anna Cheatham reached base three times via two walks and a single, while Bayleigh Long had a hit, scored a run and drove in one.
Kennedi Robinson contributed to the winning cause with two runs scored.
Theobald struck out 13 and allowed just three hits in recording her ninth pitching win of the season. She’s fanned 111 batters this spring and has whiffed 10 or more batters three times.
UC needs to defeat Milan tonight and either Westview or Huntingdon on Wednesday to qualify for the regional tournament.
