Union City, Tenn.–Union City’s Middle School track teams closed out their respective seasons on a high note.

Both the Lady Tornadoes and Tornadoes won first place in their own Invitational Thursday, the girls outdistancing second-place Dyersburg 109-92, with Brighton (50) coming in third.

The UC boys edged Brighton by the slimmest of margins, 85-84.5. Crestview was third with 50 points.

There were eight schools in all to participate in the meet.

The Twister girls got first-place efforts from Ca’Lae Ervin (high jump), Keirsten Treadwell (discus), Clare Atwill (100-meter hurdles) and Chloe Hubbard (100 meters).

A pair of girls’ relay teams also beat their respective fields, including the 4X200 (Hubbard, Atwill, Sh’nyla Moss and Uriah Davis) and the 4×100 foursome consisting of Hubbard, Ervin, Moss and Davis.

The Union City boys got first-place showings from Shontorius Fuller (100 meters), Jayden Evens (800 meters), and the 4X400 relay quartet of Aiden Reid, Andrew Beard, Tayshun Gentry and Evans.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 7, Bradford 6

UC 11, Fulton Co. 1

Barrett Cox roped a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to cap a stunning Union City rally and lift the Tornadoes to a 7-6 victory over Bradford Thursday at Elam Stadium.

The win was the first of two on the day for UC, which then mashed Fulton County 11-1 in the nightcap of a late-scheduled doubleheader.

The Twisters improved to 7-11 heading into today’s trip to Jackson for an 11 a.m. meeting with Madison Academic.

Down to its last out and trailing Bradford 6-3 Thursday, Union City pieced together an unlikely comeback.

Silas Petty smacked a two-run single with the bases loaded to get the Tornadoes within 6-5 before Cox smashed a two-base hit that chased home Landon Hauhe and Petty to set off a Purple and Gold celebration.

UC had been limited to three hits over the first six innings before mounting its rally.

Hauhe earlier had a two-run double to give the Twisters a 2-1 lead after three.

In the second game against Fulton County, Union City scored in every inning after the Pilots had taken a brief 1-0 lead in their first at-bat.

Six of the Tornadoes’ runs were unearned – the result of five FC errors.

Hauhe, Petty and Kyler Southerland had doubles for the victors, with Southerland going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Chase Norton also scored three times, while Hauhe reached base in all three of his trips to the plate with two hits and a walk.

Freshman Logan Vincent was the winning pitcher in both games for UC. He tossed an inning of shutout relief prior to the big Tornado comeback in the opener, then was outstanding with four frames of three-hit ball and nine strikeouts in Game 2.

Another frosh, Ben Kail, struck out all three batters he faced to finish up the mercy-rule triumph.

UC’s superior depth was the difference in boys’ play as the Tornadoes won matches at the second, third, fourth and fifth seeds.

The Union City girls are now 5-6, while the boys are 6-5 in team competition.

Monday, the Tornado squads will host Paducah Tilghman.
