BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Fresh off helping the University of Tennessee at Martin win the inaugural Carpenter/Chaney Classic, Garrett Chumley and Jonathan Xoinis have been named the Ohio Valley Conference Golfers of the Week.

This marks the second career award for Chumley, who also nabbed the accolade on Sept. 29. Today’s announcement results in the first OVC weekly honor for Xoinis, who is the 15th different Skyhawk to ever bring home that award.

The tandem of Chumley and Xoinis stood out for UT Martin as it topped the field of eight OVC teams in the Carpenter/Chaney Classic held at Tunica National in Tunica, Miss. The match-play event was the fourth team tournament title of the season for the Skyhawks.

Chumley sported a perfect 3-0 record in head-to-head matchups, defeating Austin Peay’s Micah Knisley 6&5 in the quarterfinals. The freshman from Murfreesboro, Tenn. then earned victories over Murray State’s Trey Lewis (2&1 in the semifinals) and Tennessee Tech’s Sean Anderson (3&2 in the championship match).

For the tournament, Chumley carded seven birdies and an eagle while ranking sixth in the 48-man field with 33 pars.

A redshirt freshman out of Chattanooga, Tenn., Xoinis also boasted an unblemished 3-0 mark in the event. His tournament started with a 4&3 triumph against Jordan Rodriguez from Austin Peay before a 2-up victory over Murray State’s Tyler Powell in the semifinals. In the championship match, Xoinis dialed up a 2&1 victory over Jackson Skeen from Tennessee Tech.

Xoinis ranked sixth in the tournament standings with 12 birdies – including a remarkable seven red scores during Tuesday’s championship outing.

UT Martin completes the 2021-22 regular season on April 11-12 when it heads to the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate at Hermitage Golf Course in Old Hickory, Tenn.
