Union City, Tenn.–Marlee Theobald had three hits and drove in three runs, and the pitching tandem of Sophie Theobald and Anna Cheatham combined on a one-hitter to help Union City trounce Dyersburg 11-1 in high school softball Thursday.
UC improved to 7-3 with the victory and will play a make-up game today at Gibson County.
The Lady Tornadoes pounded out six extra-base hits and got two safeties apiece from Lainey Barker, Kennedi Robinson, Sophie Theobald and Cheatham. Both Theobald sisters, Alli Kate Frilling and Robinson scored twice each.
Sophie Theobald tossed four hitless innings to notch her third win in four decisions. Cheatham finished out the win with three solid frames.
HIGH SCHOOL TRACK
Tornadoes finish near top of large field
Both the Union City girls and boys turned in a quality effort by placing third among more than 20 teams at the USJ Invitational.
Da’mon Rice won the triple jump for the Tornado boys, with teammate Kolby Craig placing second. Cedrion Cook finished second in both the 1600 and 3200, while Keaton Brown came in third in the discus.
Third-place finishes by Ada Rogers (300-meter hurdles) and Bailey Wagoner (3200) highlighted the Union City girls’ showing.
“I thought we competed really well against a good field,” UC head coach Wade Maddox said. “We may’ve not had a lot of first- and second-place finishes, but we have quality depth up and down our roster, and that gives us a lot of kids in the mix for points.
“Our relay teams were really good. And we had a lot of improved times – even on a cold night. Overall, it was a good building block as we move forward and progress in the season. I truly believe we’re going to be very competitive in our sectionals.”
Union City will next compete in the Laker Invitational at Calloway County High School, April 2.
