UC Tennis Teams Notch 2nd Win Over OC

Union City, Tenn.–Union City’s two tennis teams beat Obion County Central for the second time in three days Thursday, winning the girls’ match 7-0 and the boys’ competition 6-1.

Both UC squads are now 2-1 on the young season, with the boys’ team slated to play in the Crossville Invitational this weekend.

As they did in their season-opener, the Lady Tornadoes won every match (16) in their second meeting with OC on Thursday.

Annie Wade, Molly Kizer and Davy Frankum all recorded 8-0 shutouts in singles play.

Alex Del Castillo breezed to an 8-0 individual win for the UC boys, while the doubles team of Brycen White and Jack Tully didn’t lose a game vs. their OC foes in doubles.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

UC 2nd among 13 teams @ Huntingdon

The season’s first meet was promising for both Union City teams, the Lady Tornadoes and Tornadoes each placing second among 13 entries at Huntingdon.

Destiny Kenton won the shot put for the UC girls, while Ada Rogers recorded a first-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. The Tornado boys were paced by Hayden Moon’s first-place effort in the shot.

The girls’ 4X200 relay team (Nakayah Yarbrough, Alexis Smith, Indeya Hogsett and Chanyah Lipford) combined to finish second with the same group claiming runner-up honors in the 4X100 race. Bailey Wagoner came in second in the 1600-meter run.

Lipford was third in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter run, Rogers placed third in the 300-meter hurdles, and Kia German took third in the discus.

Skylar Mayes had a big day for the Union City boys, finishing second in both the 200 and 400 and as a member of a pair of relay teams. The 4X200 unit consisting of Mayes, Kameron Shade, DeAngelo Monroe and Tayehari Jones was second, while the 4X400 team comprised Kyrell Littleton, Kolby Craig, Jacob Arnold and Mayes placed third.

In the discus, Keaton Brown had a runner-up showing, and Carter Bondurant posted the same in the shot put. Craig came in second in the triple jump, one place ahead of teammate Da’mon Rice.

Union City will next compete in the Calloway County Invitational in Murray Tuesday.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

UC 7, Ripley 2

The Lady Tornadoes improved to 4-1 after taking advantage of five Ripley errors.

UC also got two hits, a pair of runs scored and an RBI from Bailey Decker. Sophie Theobald, Marlee Theobald and Emmaline Qualls all singled and scored while Lainey Barker and Kennedi Robinson had hits and drove in runs.

Anna Cheatham picked up her second win in as many decisions, going the distance with four strikeouts and six hits allowed.

Union City is scheduled to face Jackson Christian School today at 3 p.m. in the Sarah Beth Whitehead Classic.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

Crockett Co. 7, UC 2

Union City’s record is now 1-1 after dropping a home match against a CC program that Tornado head coach Travis VanHooser said: “will likely be the best team we face all season.”

Juan Lopez and Miguel Sanchez scored goals for the Twisters, who trailed 4-1 at the intermission before turning in a solid second half, according to their coach.

Ka’Jaylon Bell had four saves in goal for Union City.

The Tornadoes play at Trenton Monday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Greenfield 10, UC 9

The Yellowjackets rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and scored the game-winning on a wild pitch to hand Union City its first loss in four games.

The Tornadoes had scored twice in the top of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead in the back-and-forth contest.

UC committed six errors in the game leading to seven unearned runs.

Landon Hauhe had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and scored twice for the Purple and Gold. Silas Petty drove in three runs, and Kyler Southerland had two singles and two RBI.

Ben Kail, the last of three Tornado pitchers, was charged with the loss after coming on in relief in the seventh. Kase Ross struck out seven in a relief stint after Logan Dawkins started and went two frames.

Union City will host Jackson Christian School Monday.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

Martin 11, UC 4

Union City led 2-1 after one inning, but eventually fell to the Weakley Countians.

Kirben Thompson singled and scored in that opening frame, while Hayden Toon also crossed the plate. Byron Abbott scored in the third and Sam Jones accounted for the Tornadoes’ final run in the fifth.

Jones and Thompson combined to pitch five innings for UC.

Union City plays at Dyersburg Monday.
