Union City, Tenn.–Union City High School junior Charlton Wisener has been selected to attend the prestigious Tennessee Governor’s School for Sciences and Engineering.
Wisener was one of just 75 students from among more than 700 highly qualified applicants across the state to receive a fully-funded scholarship to the program.
This year’s GSSE, a four-week in-person residential program, will be held May 29-June 25 on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
The program will expose participants to contemporary research areas in STEM fields through a series of guest lectures, lab tours, department open houses, and educational field trips.
All students will take standard STEM courses in the morning, with afternoons reserved for STEM courses of their choice. Each course is designed to complement the student’s courses taken in high school.
Afternoon choices will include biology, chemistry, industrial and systems engineering, and materials science engineering.
Wisener, whose sister Libby was chosen for the Governor’s School For the Arts in 2019, wrote two essays as part of the application process.
He claims he’s excited for the opportunity to spend a month on the UTK campus.
“I toured there last year and really am looking forward to getting involved and learning more about the campus,” Charlton said. “I believe the experience will look good on my future resume.”
Those selected will also have opportunities to participate in organized and supervised cultural, social, and recreational, and extracurricular activities during evening and weekend hours.
