Sara Ullrich can add another line to her impressive Union City High School resume.

State Champion.

Ulrich – who has shined academically and in multiple sports as a Golden Tornado – won first place in the English Language Arts Division at the Tennessee State Beta Club Convention in Nashville last month.

The UCHS senior will now compete on the national level this summer.

Already a member of her school’s prestigious 30+ ACT Club, the Top 10 and a steady performer in both softball and volleyball, Ullrich added the Beta Club accolade to her long list of accomplishments.

She finished fourth last year at the state level and seventh nationally.

There were 138 schools represented in the state competition this year. Competitions were held both in-person and virtually, with Ullrich winning with a virtual entry.

“Sara is the ultimate competitor in the classroom and on the field/court, so it was no shock to me that she dominated the Language Arts test and came home the champion,” UCHS Beta Club Sponsor Ashley Martin said. “I can’t wait to see how she performs at the national level this year.”

Several other UC High School students also competed at the state level.

They included:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS: Lucas Greer (10th grade)

MATH: Myranda Parr (9th grade), Shelby Bondurant (10th grade), Owen Rogers (11th grade)

SCIENCE: Charlton Wisener (11th grade), Olivia Tanner (12th grade)

SOCIAL STUDIES: Addison Kitchen (9th grade), Molly Kizer (10th grade), Chloe Meade (11th grade), Jordan Hernandez (12th grade)

FRESHMAN PROBLEM SOLVING: Alli Frilling, Claire Frilling, Allyson Beaman, Jolie Madrey

SPEECH DIVISION II: Emma Powell

“I am always so proud of our students and the level of drive they have for academics,” Martin added.

The UCHS Beta Club has 98 members who must adhere to several criteria to remain part of the group.

Those on the traditional academic track must maintain a 93-or-better average while having no ‘D’s or ‘F’s’. Students in the Union City Schools Magnet program must keep an 88-or-above average in their classes with no ‘D’s or ‘F’s.
