
Dresden, Tenn.–Students in Weakley County Schools supported two food drives benefitting their neighbors with more than 11,800 cans collected. Dresden Elementary and Middle Schools worked with Cash Express to collect for Santa’s Helpers. Greenfield, Gleason, Martin Primary, Martin Elementary, Martin Middle, and Westview took part in the Can Caravan sponsored by WCMT Radio.
Dresden Elementary’s class competition netted 1,491 canned goods. Lacie Watson’s class will be celebrating the 252 cans they brought in with a pizza party. In the photo is Assistant Principal Joy Cooper, Cassie Tarver, and Janna Bizzle.
The Fine Arts Club at Dresden Middle oversaw the effort that netted 1,788 Cans. Students got creative with their display and formed a train. Rachel Winstead’s 5th grade homeroom will be celebrating their winning total with pizza. Club sponsors are Pam Copeland and Lynn Brasfield.
Dresden High’s collection was led by (left to right) students senior Theron Cogburn, DHS Health Science teacher Whitney Cates, sophomore Abby Trandel, and freshman Summer Di Pietro. They collected for both canned food drives.
Gleason Elementary Beta Club with sponsor Melody Hopper organized the Can Caravan project and brought in 434 cans of food to help families this Christmas season. Amy McKenzie’s class were responsible for 152 of those cans and won for the most collected.
Greenfield School directed their 1,253 cans toward the Can Caravan which will benefit those utilizing WeCare Ministries.
Martin Primary’s winning class for highest number of cans collected was Rachel Cooper’s second grade. They added 166 to help make the total donation of 794 cans.
Martin Elementary collected a total of 4,248 items. Principal Patresa Rogers used “Amazed, Overwhelmed, Excited, Proud” to describe the feelings of the school in a note of appreciation for students’ and their families’ support posted on social media. The total is more than in any previous year. Candace Sumner’s 5th grade class donated a total of 786 items and Tina Brown’s 4th grade class donated a total of 663 items.
Martin Middle was able to collect a total of 2,407 cans. Kimberly Ware’s homeroom won for most collected with 607. SRO Jimmy Brown, the organizer of the MMS collection each year, will continue his tradition of hosting a pizza party for the winning homeroom.
Westview brought in 600 cans which helped bring the overall total from Weakley County Schools to nearly 12,000.
