Union City, Tenn.–The 2022-23 Union City Schools calendar checks all the boxes.

From the state-mandated 180 days of student instruction to the required number of teacher development days and a lengthy holiday break, the proposed schedule for next year was well-received by the UC School Board Monday.

The group approved the calendar unanimously.

The future schedule is similar to several in past years, with the instructional days split nearly evenly into two semesters – 89 days and 91 days.

There are four significant breaks for both students and teachers, the longest a period of Dec. 16, 2022, through Jan. 8, 2023, for Christmas and New Year’s. Teachers will return for an in-service day, Jan. 9, with students due back on Jan. 10, 2023.

The first day of classes for the 2022-23 school year is set for Aug. 8. An exact graduation date has not yet been set.

The final day for classes will be May 26, 2023.

Teachers will report for in-service Aug. 1, completing professional development for three days before registration and then the last of three prep days. Two prep days will be required during June and July.

Classes will be dismissed for Fall Break, Oct. 5-7, and again Nov. 23-25 for Thanksgiving.

Spring Break is slated for April 3-7, with weekends both before and after those dates.

“This calendar is similar to one that has worked well for us the last few years,” Assistant Director of Schools Michael Paul Miller said after putting together the schedule. “It allows us to make the most of our educational days and gives our faculty the opportunity to develop a plan for those days. It also provides an almost-even split of instructional days to allow them to plan their curriculum.

“And I’m sure both students and staff will welcome the nice breaks. Having our students finished with the school year before Memorial Day is always something that we strive to do, too.”

UC Schools will continue to observe traditional holidays – Labor Day (Sept. 5, 2022), Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 16, 2023), and President’s Day (Feb. 20, 2023).

There will be early dismissal for students Dec. 16, 2022, and on the final day of classes (May 26, 2023).

Any more than five inclement weather days will be made up at the end of the year.
