Union City, Tenn.–It was raining threes for the Union City girls Saturday in Jackson.

The Lady Tornadoes knocked down 14 3-pointers on their way to a 57-9 romp over Madison Academic Magnet School in an afternoon matinee.

Amari Bonds made a half-dozen treys, and Marlee Theobald sank four shots from beyond the arc to help UC (6-2) to its fifth straight victory over the winless Lady Mustangs (0-8).

The Tornado boys made it a sweep of the day’s doubleheader and the season series with a 61-49 triumph in the nightcap.

Union City outscored the host Mustangs 19-5 in the fourth quarter and got a game-high 28 points from D.J. Robinson to improve to 5-3.

UC will travel to Henry County Tuesday night before then hosting West Carroll on Thursday this week.

Each of the Lady Twisters’ nine first-half field goals was a 3-pointer as Bonds sank five trifectas and Theobald bottomed three.

Bonds and Theobald combined for 27 of Union City’s 30 first-half points when the Purple and Gold took a commanding 21-point intermission advantage.

Bonds finished with 25 points and Theobald tallied 12. Adaiysha Snow finished with nine markers.

UC won a meeting of the two squads one week earlier, 56-9.

Playing without leading scorer Malaki Brooks (wrist injury), the Tornadoes had to work considerably harder for their second victory in eight days after beating the Mustangs by 18 the previous Saturday.

Robinson hit 7-of-10 free throws in the final eight minutes and also sank a 3-pointer to fuel Union City’s fourth-quarter rally.

Jackson Chism scored 10 points off the bench to give the Twisters a second double-digit scorer.

UC trailed 12-11 after one quarter but led 31-28 at halftime.

The injured Brooks is expected to miss at least three weeks of play, according to head coach Shane Sisco.
