Mayfield, Ky.–At the request of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear late last night, President Joe Biden issued a federal declaration of emergency for the state, which will clear the way for resources to be committed to relief efforts following the devastating tornadoes that swept through western Kentucky.

Mayfield took a direct hit from one of the tornadoes, killing at least 70 people and levelling large portions of the town. The Graves County Courthouse was destroyed, as were entire neighborhoods, businesses, homes, and churches.

Gov. Beshear toured Mayfield as well as his parents’ hometown of Dawson Springs Saturday morning.

He said, “The devastation I saw in Mayfield this morning was absolutely heartbreaking. This community is strong, but they need our prayers and support. I am committed to getting this community – and every other area impacted – the resources needed to recover. We’re in this together.”

The governor said, “At more than 200 miles long, the storm event was the longest tornado track on record and the largest in Kentucky history. I appreciate the President’s swift response during our time of need. We are committed to helping the people of Western Kentucky recover.”

A candle factory which employed 110 people was destroyed in the tornado and 40 people were recovered from the scene. The governor said it will be a miracle if more people are recovered and said the death toll is likely to be even higher in the days to come.

At his press conference Saturday afternoon, the governor said in addition to donations, the people of Mayfield and western Kentucky need people to donate blood.

If you would like to mail in a donation, please make your check to Kentucky Finance and Administration Cabinet. In the memo line please note the donation is for the “Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund.” Send check to Kentucky Finance and Administration Cabinet, 200 Mero Street, 5th Floor, Frankfort, KY 40622.
